Our conference will be held at Dawson College, located at 3040 Sherbrooke Street West in the city of Westmount.

	The college is conveniently located above the Atwater metro stop on the border between Westmount and Montreal. The corner of Peel and Ste-Catherine, the reputed centre of downtown, is just two stops away; the Grande Bibliothèque is five stops away. There are small hotels and interesting eateries within walking distance, but it is outside the high-rise jungle of the downtown core. Directions Directions to the College, as well as maps, can also be found on the Dawson Web site. Parking Parking is not great, so if you can come by public transit, by taxi, or on foot, so much the better. There are parking meters in the area, but most are time-limited, and there is indoor parking in the nearby Alexis Nihon Plaza (described below).

About Dawson College

Dawson College was one of the original CEGEPs (roughly translated as colleges of general and career education) set up in the late sixties as part of Quebec's initiative to raise its literacy and educational levels and to bring the possibility of post-Grade 11 education to all residents of Quebec. The CEGEPs are tuition-free, and provide a large variety of three-year career programs (such as nursing, engineering technologies, and graphic arts), as well as the two years of general education that all Quebec residents are required to fulfil in order to be accepted at university. Dawson is one of the largest colleges in the system, with approximately 10,000 students, and offers a wide range of two- and three-year programs.

Dawson occupies buildings that originally constituted the Mother House of the Congregation of Notre Dame de Montréal. This unique, uncloistered order of teaching nuns was founded by Marguerite Bourgeoys (1620–1700), one of only ten Canadian Roman Catholic saints; she was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982. The Mother House itself (1904–6) was designed by Montreal architect Joseph-Omer Marchand (1873–1936) and his American-born partner Samuel Stevens Haskell (1871–1913).

Nearby Attractions and Shopping

• Atwater Library and Computer Centre: This venerable institution is a Mechanics' Institute, and is the oldest lending library in Canada. Housed in a heritage building that has been designated a National Historic Site, it remains an independent library and is not funded as a municipal institution. Its history is evident in its service ethic, which focuses on working-class needs. The library also houses a branch of the Montreal Children`s Library in its basement and a few non-profit organizations on its top floor, including the Aubin Foundation's research centre, based on the collection of the Marxist historian Stanley Bréhaut Ryerson.

• The Pepsi Forum (known to most Montrealers and ex-Montrealers as the Forum or the Montreal Forum) is the renovated former arena of the Montreal Canadiens. It now houses a cinema complex, a Future Shop, restaurants, and an SAQ (liquor store), but, in some respects, the interior has been maintained as a giant piece of memorabilia.

• Alexis Nihon Plaza is linked underground to the college. It is a practical kind of shopping mall, with a pharmacy, Canadian Tire, Zellers, Winners, smaller boutiques, and a decent food court. On Ste-Catherine Street, across from the plaza, is a Bureau en gros (Staples), where you can make photocopies and purchase office supplies.

• Westmount Square, also connected underground, offers more upscale shopping opportunities in boutiques and art galleries. It opens onto Greene Avenue, a quiet shopping street with art galleries, trendy decorating shops, and that Montreal institution, Tony Shoes.
